Bayern Munich confirm Jupp Heynckes as manager until end of season

Jupp Heynckes is one of the most successful German managers of all time

Bayern Munich have reappointed Jupp Heynckes as manager until the end of the season.

Bayern are languishing in third place in the Bundesliga, five points behind leaders Borussia Dortmund.

German media report that Heynckes could return to Bayern until the end of the season with current Hoffenheim coach Julian Nagelsmann tipped to take over for the 2018/19 season.

The 72-year-old has not managed a club since guiding Bayern Munich to an historic treble in the 2012-13 season but will come out of retirement to try to rejuvenate a disappointing campaign.

Heynckes himself said that he "would not have returned to any club in the world except Bayern Munich".

Peru have no special treatment planned for Argentina's Lionel Messi
But one area where all media were agreed was that should Argentina miss out, it won't be Messi's fault. Or have they left it too late? If they draw, they are out if both Argentina and Paraguay win.

In an interview with Kicker magazine, Heynckes said he was "not making a comeback, it's a service for a friend".

"The conversations that Uli Hoeness, Hasan Salihamidzic and I have had showed that again". We are very grateful Jupp agreed to return as head coach. I and the staff will mobilize all the skills to get this club back to success, "said Heynckes. At present he is the ideal coach for Bayern", he added.

Heynckes has enjoyed three previous spells in charge of the club, with his most recent between 2011 and 2013 proving the most fruitful, winning the treble of Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal and Champions League in his final season.

"For now I'll have 10 months off and then I'll start looking for a new club", he said.

Italian Ancelotti took over last season but was sacked after Bayern slipped to second place in the league, twice squandering two-goal leads in consecutive games.
