In memoriam: Energy East (2013-2017)

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said Thursday that now Energy East is dead, there is an even greater urgency in completing the Trans Mountain project to diversify the industry's export markets beyond the United States.

The premiers of Alberta and New Brunswick expressed disappointment over the decision, while the Opposition Conservatives blasted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government for "disastrous" energy policies that they blame for lost jobs and investment.

In part because of its sheer length, Energy East would have likely had higher shipping costs than both the Keystone XL and Trans Mountain pipelines.

Energy East would have carried 1.1-million barrels of crude oil a day from Alberta to Saint John, New Brunswick.

Irving Oil has worked with TransCanada on this project since it was first announced in 2013.

Quebec politicians, along with Indigenous and environmental groups, welcomed the project's demise, branding it as a harbinger of the inevitable death of fossil fuels and a reminder of the need for further green energy development.

"We are proud of the hard work and commitment to the Energy East project shown by our employees and TransCanada over the last four years", said Whitcomb.

October 5, 2017 amidst an unprecedented announcement from the National Energy Board that it would include upstream and downstream greenhouse gas emissions in its review of the pipeline.

It announced Thursday that it will no longer be proceeding with its applications for the mega project "after careful review of changed circumstances".

Uber CEO Khosrowshahi to visit United Kingdom to rescue London licence
TfL cited concerns about Uber's conduct and approach in areas including checks on drivers and reporting criminal offences. Its drivers can keep operating until then and potentially after that date if the appeal process is extended.

REGINA-The premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan say Energy East would have been a nation-building project and that TransCanada's decision to cancel the pipeline is a bad day for the West. We look forward to working with TransCanada and the federal government to find employment through Project Labour Agreements on other pipelines, specifically Keystone XL.

The company has said repeatedly that eastern Canadian refiners rely on imports for 86 per cent of their daily needs.

The decision, almost a month after the company halted regulatory applications for the project in the face of tough official scrutiny, is a blow to the ailing economy of the New Brunswick province and heads off a broader political row over the project.

"Energy, pipeline and climate issues have been among the most highly charged political debates in Canada for several years", said Abacus chairman Bruce Anderson.

August 30, 2016: All future National Energy Board hearings into TransCanada's Energy East pipeline project are suspended until the board rules on motions demanding two of three panel members resign.

"The economic benefits of the Energy East pipeline have never been added to our economic and fiscal projections", he said. "Nothing has changed in the government's decision-making process".

October 8, 2015: Environmental group Environmental Defence says the National Energy Board is rushing the process for Energy East by gathering oral traditional evidence from aboriginal bands before it has received a complete application. "We accepted the reversal of Enbridge's Line 9B (pipeline through Montreal), but we ensured there were measures in place to follow up and protect the community".

"This was an investor decision that resulted from the low global price of oil".
