Metro, roads disrupted in Catalonia pro-independence protest

Pique who supports an independent Catalonia was booed constantly as Spain practiced

Catalonia's emergency services said Sunday they had treated 91 people and 11 police officers were injured in a police crackdown at polling stations for an independence referendum banned by Madrid.

Independence supporters gather in Barcelona's main square, Spain, Sunday, Oct. 1, 2017.

Catalonia's government will hold a closed-door Cabinet meeting Monday to discuss the next steps in its plan to declare independence from Spain following a disputed referendum marred by violence.

Rajoy, for his part, has rejected accusations of excessive force against police and has insisted that "no referendum has been held in Catalonia".

On Sunday, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said the ballot had failed, while Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont vowed to continue with the independence process after millions voted to leave.

On Monday, secessionist leaders prepared to present the results to Catalonia's regional parliament, which has vowed to move forward with the creation of an independent republic.

Spain's interior minister has said the 5,000 extra police officers would remain in Catalonia as long as possible. Of those who voted, some 90 percent voted yes to independence.

The Catalan government now says it plans to unilaterally declare independence from Spain within 48 hours.

"I've seen how President Puigdemont has flooded the streets with his followers to stop people obeying the law and to make them disrespect justice", she said.

In Taiwan, the New Power Party issued a statement saluting Catalans for voting in the independence referendum, in spite of the Spanish government's use of violence to interfere with the vote. Madrid had asked potential voters to boycott the referendum, calling it illegal.

"The Catalan government calls for an urgent worldwide mediation, preferably European".

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu said the club made the decision as a protest against the violent clashes rather than security concerns.

Puigdemont said the vote was valid and binding, and that "we have to apply it".

However, the European Commission described the crisis as "an internal matter" for Spain, that has to be dealt with in line with the constitutional order.
