White House says 'premature' to talk gun control after Vegas shooting

Las Vegas Metro Police officers confer near a staging area in the intersection of Tropicana Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard South after a mass shooting at a music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Las Vegas Nevada U.S. early

When the chief White House spokeswoman again brought up Chicago having a high level of violence despite its having the "strictest gun laws in the country", U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly and others were quick to respond.

She went on to repeat that today was a day of mourning, not a day to discuss policy.

This is the White House not talking about gun control. Instead, she urged Americans to "unite as a country".

Despite this, Sanders told reporters it would be "premature" to explore the idea of tightening gun laws through measures like background checks.

She said there was a "time and place" for a debate but that is "not the place we're in at this moment".

"To my colleagues: your cowardice to act can not be whitewashed by thoughts and prayers", tweeted Murphy, who has pressed for stricter gun laws since the Sandy Hook massacre.

Sanders said that determination would be left to local and federal law enforcement.

She allegedly told students to get down on the floor and lock the doors - "lockdown mode" - and began yelling "active shooter". The university immediately broadcast a "shelter in place" alert via its "TrojansAlert" system, Carlisle said.

Sanders looked to explain the split: "There is a difference between being a candidate and being the President".

Mark Kelly, husband of former U.S. lawmaker Gabby Giffords who was shot in 2011, urged Congress and the White House to pass gun prevention legislation following the massacre in Las Vegas.

Sanders was unusually emotional in opening her press briefing, choking up and stifling tears as she recounted anecdotes of victims and heroes, by name, from the Sunday night horror on Las Vegas' famed strip.

'That certainly hasn't helped there, so when that time for those conversations to take place, we will look at things that can actually have a real impact'.

"I have not spoken the President about that specific issue", Sanders said.

She added: 'It's very easy for Mrs Clinton to criticise and come out but I think we need to remember the only person with blood on their hands is. the shooter'.

"What these people did for each other says far more about who we are as Americans than the cowardly acts of a killer ever could", Sanders said during the White House daily press briefing.
