10 million USA users saw Russia-linked Ads: Facebook

Zuckerberg outlined a series of steps that would help prevent the manipulation of the social network, including more transparency on political ads appearing on Facebook.

Fewer than half of the ads - which ran between 2015 and 2017 - were seen before the election, with 56 percent of them seen after the election.

On 6 September, Facebook revealed a Russian-based influence operation had purchased $100,000 worth of ads to promote divisive political and social messages during the presidential campaign.

"What Facebook has found thus far have been ads that were funded by money that could be directly tracked back to Russian Federation", said Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff, ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee, Monday.

Feeling the heat from Congressional investigators and special counsel Robert Mueller, Facebook is opening up about its foreign agent infestation.

Facebook vice president of communications Elliot Schrage on Monday posted answers to "hard questions" prompted by the Russian Federation ads.

For 50% of the ads, less than $3 was spent; for 99% of the ads, less than $1,000 was spent. The news website that first posted on the marketed events published on Facebook, The Daily Beast, claimed that one ad marketed an anti-immigrant gathering in August 2016 in Idaho.

The company is also making clear that it takes the right to free speech seriously and will never be able to remove all objectionable content.

TfL cited concerns about Uber's conduct and approach in areas including checks on drivers and reporting criminal offences. Its drivers can keep operating until then and potentially after that date if the appeal process is extended.

In a bid to strengthen their manual review process, the company is hiring 1,000 people to join their global ads review team.

Mr Zuckerberg has been heavily criticised over recent months, over the social network's role in the 2016 US Presidential election.

Russian operatives frame worked an assemblage of deceptive web sites and social media pages to recognize American voters' reception to propaganda, and then utilized a high powered Facebook tool to frequently dispatch them messages contrived to impact their political behavior like those who are accustomed with the inquiry into foreign intrusion in the U.S. election. The companies have been asked to testify before the Senate on November 1.

A spokesperson for the company said its internal investigation is not finished. Several lawmakers - including Virginia Sen.

Twitter said last week that it had suspended 22 accounts corresponding to the 450 Facebook accounts that were likely operated out of Russian Federation.

Approximately 10 million people actually saw the ads Russian Federation purchased, according to Facebook and the Times.

Some of those same suspicious accounts on Facebook, however, also have ties to another 200 accounts on Twitter, a realization it shared with congressional investigators last week.

Twitter's decision to share that information with Congress followed a report by the US government's top intelligence agencies, which slammed RT in January as the "Kremlin's principal worldwide propaganda outlet".
